Bevendean Update

The Bevendean Pub
December 2014

On 12th December, Community Pub, The Bevy, will re-open after a 4 year campaign by local people to get the pub up and running again.

More than 700 people bought ‘community shares’ in the pub, whilst fundraising events, grants and loans raised the rest of the funds needed. East Brighton Trust are proud to have provided additional financial support in the form of grants and loans for this, the most exciting project we've been involved in yet. See some pictures of our visit to the pub the week before its official opening.

The pub will bring a much needed community venue to the area and has created at least 8 jobs for local residents. Read more about the project on The Bevy website and follow The Bevy on Facebook for updates.

On Saturday 13th December, a ribbon will be cut by Barbara Sayers, whose late husband Colin was chair of East Brighton Trust. Colin did so much work in his local community and was instrumental in highlighting the need for a community pub.

East Brighton Trust bought the Bevendean pub last Christmas and has planning permission to turn the first floor into 3 one bed flats. But they don’t have the funds to refurbish downstairs and are looking for organisations to put forward proposals to take over the running of the ground floor. So is there enough interest from the community to run its own pub/café/community space? Everything downstairs will be removed just leaving an empty shell but we will still need cash to do the place up. We can raise this by forming a co-operative. This means we will be able to secure loans and advice from the Co-op bank, issue shares and do some of the work ourselves. Interested? Then please come along to the meeting. If you can’t make the meeting but want to get involved or buy shares let us know. We need a place where everyone can meet in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean. If we don’t act fast this opportunity will be lost. You don’t need to know anything about running a pub, a café, or being in a co-op, we just need your enthusiasm and support. Let’s work together to make it happen.

We are looking to develop the ground floor of the property.  We have now issued an invitation to submit an expression of interest to groups and organisations interested in using the ground floor here
Early June 2011
Planning permission has been granted for the conversion of the first floor providing 3 one bed flats. Meanwhile, take a look at the draft plans here.
We will keep you posted with the progress of this latest project from East Brighton Trust

The Trust held two public consultations at The Bevendean pub in March. These events were well attended – with over forty local residents giving their views on the possible use for the Ground Floor.

Feedback has identified a number of 'community' uses that would provide opportunities for local people to meet together for a range of different activities; from purely social uses - including a pub and/or cafe, mother and toddler groups, arts/craft groups, community development activities etc…as well as more commercial options. A small group of Directors are now exploring the viability of these options and will report back in the summer.
